    Default Missin Boost

Here is some info on my J when it was boosted... It has a built LN2 (PnP head/valve job/all upgraded valvetrain/turbo cam/v8 spring swapped lifters/high volume oil pump, etc...) and I was running a Garrett T3/T04B 60-1 turbo, HKS SSQV/Tial WG, 2 1/2" charge & full exhaust piping, highflow cat/10" resonator & no muffler. [very basic description]. Well here are some pics during initial install & the finished product, as well as an idle video of it's sexy lope.

^^ The pipe hanging down wasn't connected to anything yet, lol.

    Finished:

Exterior shots w/FMIC: (yes it had an SS wing for a shortwhile, that's LONG gone, lol, hey, atleast it was fast when it had it right?)

    After Sunfire front end swap:

    Clean build

Not enough J's on this site and I will say, it's nice to see a non eco build

Thank you. When my husband and I get back stateside, I plan to do a new performance build with it, and it will be Eco swapped... I'm thinking possibly even an LE5 bottom end mated to an L61 head. Asside from an external crank trigger, it's a direct swap.. The Eco specifically is a direct swap for my year. I had fun with this, but I've been toying with this motor for 6 1/2 years... ready to try a new build... and also, the goal is much higher than before, and I want a MUCH cleaner setup. This was a pretty decent setup, but it was my first jump into this kind of thing. I have much higher standards/expectations for the next build I do with the car.

Unfortunately we only had a flux core welder, which welded my custom downpipe/exhaust fine, but does not do aluminum.. so I was forced to use the silicone couplers. I was planning on having the charge pipes redone, with new piping & mostly welds... but I ended up discontinuing the project before I got to that.

I actually had wiseco pistons/eagle rods & a few other goodies in-hand... so I could up the 9psi ( which put it about mid 200s to the wheels) to 20+psi.... but ended up selling it and ripping the turbo kit off and parting it out.

ALL J-body PCMs run off alpha-n fueling... aka TPS Vs RPM... so via PCM, It has no way of compensating for boost. Some external form of fuel management is really necesary. I did only run off the PCM but it's not ideal and is pretty difficult to get it close to 100% accurate. How I tuned it, was to make sure the car went into PE (power enrinch) when the turbo would spool.. by doing this I had to figure out at exactly what throttle position/rpm, my turbo would spool, thus switching it into PE, which basically dumps fuel in. It took quite a bit of fine tuning... and we got it pretty damn accurate.. but it is still impossible to make it 100% via this method... This is where boost at partial throttle CAN become dangerous when running a boosted J, you can hit lean spots, because it's creating boost but the PCM has no idea and can't compensate for it.

SOME 1997 Js/PCMs came speed density, so they have the ability to tune for this, as it uses MAP vs RPM to fuel, so it is much more accurate. Some can swap to this PCM.

A supercharger can be tuned pretty accurately being run off the pulley it's very predictable, a turbo system is just a bitch. lol.

It still has the built engine in it, but yes, it's back to N/A now...
