ok, I have been having a problem with a friends car, '01 grand am. It acts fine upon start up, and then begins to drop rpm and runs very rough. Before I got to the car it has had it's cat replaced twice, and the icm, and plugs replaced. I cleaned the Iac valve, and changed fuel filter upon request of the owner. When I got it on my scanner is has no codes, history or current. She told me that when it's on fast-idle it's fine, but once it comes off that, and drops the rpms down, it runs rough and wants to stall and has once.
Watching on the scanner, iac, rpm, and stft
Runs fine and everything seems to be normal, then all of a sudden rpms drop to 560 or so, iac counts go way up, and stft goes -15 or more if i recall.
I checked for bent or obstructed fuel return line, made sure the fpr wasn't leaking into the vacuum hose, and did a overall inspection of the cover that houses the icm and coils( the name of it escapes me) and all seems fine,
I ohm the injectors and they were all 14.6-14.7 except for #1 which was 14.1, is this a problem? It is within spec, but is also quite different than the other.
I believe that some of these issues are related. Such as the cat needing replaced twice within 2 months, I think it's running rich and over-loading the cat with unburnt fuel and causing premature failure.
Any help on this would be very appreciated.
Also I asked her if she has a habit of taking the gas pump to the nearest dollar when finishing, she says yes sometimes as much as 60-70 cents.
Could the evap canister be saturated and causing the rich fuel mixture?

Id want to watch the scanner and see if it starts running badly as soon as it goes ito closed loop....if it does Id say the O2 was suspect. Disconnect the 02 and see how it runs. This will force it to run off of default values instead of any possibly skewed but still "in-spec" values it may recieve from the O2

Q4s are pretty basic and bulletproof.

Common issues are the ignition cassette itself (he white plastic housing) vacuum leaks from the hoses for the PCV system, fuel pressure issues caused by the pump, and random animal damage on the wires.

Did you do an IAC relearn? key on to run for 20 seconds. key off for 20 seconds, start engine

no need really. clearing codes with a scanner (even if it doesnt have codes.....) will also clear the fuel trims so you can see whats happening.

I'll be damned, maven you were exactly right, the o2 never crossed my mind, especially since there were no codes, I erased the codes and reset the ft like you said, and it ran the same when it reached closed loop, unplugged the o2 sensor and it ran a lot better, so we replaced the sensor even the the old one was 2 months old, I used a bosch and cleared the codes again and all is well, I appreciate the help and leanred something I will use in the future. Thanks again maven
