what about this article I saw posted on another board?

Holden to mirror Mazda3 with sports, SS variations of its Oz-made small car

    18 March 2011
    By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS

A HIGH-PERFORMANCE version of the Cruze – potentially carrying Holden’s coveted ‘SS’ badge - is in development as General Motors embarks on a new chapter in Australian vehicle manufacturing this week with the launch of the Adelaide-built JH four-door Cruze sedan.

Believed to use a variation of the 132kW/230Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Ecotec petrol engine employed in European versions of the Cruze’s Opel cousin, the Astra, the sports model will sit above the newly announced SRi-V flagship.

Expected on sale next year, the sports Cruze will probably be offered in four-door sedan and five-door hatch body styles, and will most likely first see the light of day at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne in early July, ahead of late-2011 launch.

The Melbourne-made Chevrolet Cruze hatch concept shown at the 2010 Paris motor show is a strong indicator of what Holden’s answer to the VW Golf GTI, Mazda3 MPS and Ford’s upcoming Focus ST/XR may look like.

According to a Holden insider, the Cruze has been designed to accommodate any powertrain available now or in the future for the Astra J, since both cars share the same basic GM Delta II small-car architecture.

“We are investigating all possibilities,” he said. “We would love to explore a performance version. It is obviously on our wish list. Every engine option available in the Astra is under review.”

From top: The new Holden Cruze SRi-V, future Holden Cruze Hatch and the European Opel Astra.

    [IMGwidth=240 height=430]http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mellor.nsf/story2/9D01788EE18E2099CA2578570017C621/$file/Holden_Cruze_stack.jpg[/IMG]

Holden engineers are already exploring a firmer and lower version of the Watts link rear suspension system that debuted in 1.4-litre turbo-petrol ‘iTi’ versions of the facelifted JH Cruze sedan this week, along with a weightier calibration for the electric power steering set-up that also appears in the same variants.

“We just did not have the resources to develop (revised) suspension and steering for the SRi models,” the insider added. “But watch this space.”

Meanwhile, GoAuto understands the existing torsion beam rear suspension and hydraulic power steering systems that underpin all non-1.4 turbo models may gradually give way to the more sophisticated Watts link and EPS hardware, with the diesel thought to be next in line.

“We expect that would probably be the case,” our source said.

The Australian-built Cruze will eventually emulate the Mazda3 in providing blanket coverage of the small-car segment, as Holden aims to overtake it and the Toyota Corolla in terms of sales.

GM could go one better than its rivals, however, by also producing an HSV version of its small car, potentially powered by a version of the 213kW twin-scroll turbocharged direct-injection petrol four that debuted in the Opel OPC concept at last year’s Paris motor show.

Speculation is also growing that a compact SUV to slot underneath the ageing CG Captiva range will eventually be spun off the Delta platform, in addition to a super-compact SUV currently being developed by GM from the Opel Corsa chassis.

However, the Cruze-based crossover is unlikely to be built in Australia as Holden’s Elizabeth plant is busy building the Cruze, as well as the Zeta architecture vehicles (Commodore, Caprice and derivatives).

Holden sold 28,334 examples of the JG Cruze CD and CDX sedan in 2010, ranking GM’s new global small car fourth behind the Corolla (41,632), Mazda3 (39,003) and Hyundai i30 (29,772). Since then, the company has leapfrogged the latter for third spot.

Deliveries of the upgraded and localised JH Cruze sedan commence early next month, while the Holden-designed Cruze hatch will join it on sale in October.

"You nail that turn in point, and you nail that apex, and you nail that track out point to the inch. If the car the whole time while you're doing that isn't screaming bloody murder, you're not at ten tenths. And you need to push a little harder."

Theres no lines to read between.....GM isnt putting hipo suspension on the Cruze anywhere in the world...... the Holden SRi is out now and doesnt get ANY power boost. its all just interior options, totally lame, that however doesnt mean the Cruze here wont get more power, I fully expect the Cruze for 2012 to mirror the Veronas engine options. Expect the 2.4 SIDI and maybe the 2.0T to be become optional engines in the 2LT and LTZ trims, kinda like when Saturn had the 2.4 optional in the Ions, it wasnt a Redline Light, it was just an optional engine, expect same thing. Only saving grace is that there are quality aftermarket suspension available( KW, Bilstein) and foreign Cruzes have decent brakes that will bolt on our cars with minimal fuss (if you can get them ) problem is that the ECO is the only car that weighs a reasonable amount and big engines in the ECO wont happen And if the bigger cars still get the dual mass flywheel theyll still suck to drive
I need to engage in homicidal activity on a massive scale......

I understand what you're getting, and it's dumb that GM put something that heavy on a 4 cylinder car, but the 2.4 and 2.0T will surely help it.

Also while it's not a Cobalt SS the Cruze isn't really a slouch in the handling department.

I'm talking about the dual mass fly wheel and the base Cruze isn't a shtty handling car. I'm not comparing it to the SS.

to run with the big dogs you gotta be able to play/ cruze doesnt. so lets talk in the new car thread about cars that do?

    focus rs comes to mind...
if Gm notice that folks pay attention to that and it sells, perhaps they will make cars we want to buy. In the meantime I am still in lock step with original Delta just sayin'

Completely understandable. Obviously GM didn't design the Cruze to be a world performer when it comes to the sporty compact segment.

    Focus RS used to.

Right now it doesn't exist and probably wont for 2011

not to mention is no where to be found on North American soils.

Right now there's not much in the small car market at all

why am i not surprised about this. GM seems to worry about making profits right now and surviving in the crappy economy. they've paid the gov back that bailout money. now it seems they want to get re-established before pleasing everyones demands.

While it might not be a SS, I think a 2.0T Cruze will satisfy alot of people.

2.0t 6m cruze would probably make me happy. It'll probably take a Regal GS though.

Has GM even announced when the GS is coming out? The turbo 2.0 CXL just doesn't really do too much
