Thread: LHU Flex Fuel Powered Airboat

Default LHU Flex Fuel Powered Airboat

This new project boat will get the 2011 LHU engine. One of my customers, Mike came in this morning wanting to start his new project. We ordered the new engine today and hope to get it by Friday or Monday. I hope the internals are the same as the LNF. I haven't had time to research it. I think it will have a few more sensors to determine what fuel you put in the tank. You guys helped me get started on the LNF project and i may need your help again.
    Thanks, Chuck

Fuel composition is all algorithm based, there's no fuel composition sensor on GM flex fuelies anymore.

the newer engines will make it next to impossible to tune, with no support from trifecta (unless u can convince Vince to do a one off project which will be expensive) The future of tuning new my 2011 on , motors, from any manufacturer is bleak,.....

Thanks Maven and qwikredline, i guess i need to drop Vince a line. If it is too much to build a tune for this engine maybe i can make changes and get an LNF ECM wired to run it.
    Thanks, Chuck

vince is our last hope for the bastard e16a.

and even that is looking bleak
Matty: The LNF MAF doesn't like extra air flowing past it and not being tuned for it.

The problem may be some a whole series of little issues like, for example, different crank trigger signal wheels - LSJ/LNF are different for example... not saying they cant be changed, but its a whole level of complexity. The race Grand Am Cobalts, when they switched to turbo from S/C simply did a piggy back to the LNF ecu on updated SC cars...but GM did it, they had the tools....Lets say the crank trigger is different and you find that. So you remove the crank, change the trigger wheel, put it back, and *oops* find another thing that has to be changed. Its a never ending deal potentially.

Example: 2004 Redlines are class 2/LAN wiring. I have an 04. I want to install an updated steering column with a brushless motor. But as 2005 on Redlines and Cobatls are LAN/LAN Wiring, I cannot practically update my 2004 without either: redoing the entire wiring system. PCM etc to 2005 specs up, including changing radio etc etc etc - or rewiring the brushless ps motor and computer. Both are totally impractical solutions, so I quit and decided to install in a 2005 Redline rather than update mine. Its a nightmare, and you were very fortunate that Vince is doing LNF stuff for you. Like I said, the future is bleak and the desire in this community to modify and tune Cruzes or Buicks does not appear strong. Therefore the aftermarket will not respond unless there is some potential for sales....

    end of rant

Yea, the tuning on that app is going to be the difficult part as everyone is stating.

Vince posted on the Cobalt SS Network: Wow, GM really detuned this thing.
Someone sent him a log from a stock Regal 2.0 turbo.
He said, It will be interesting to see what we can get out of it.
I hope he will be able to help me tune ours after we get it wired.
    Thanks, Chuck

Awesome. Another turbo airboat. As far as I know, Vince has been working on cracking that ECU for a little while now. I think you have high chances that he will be able to help you out again.

I held on hopes for my 04 Ion QC3 all the way up till it was paid off to put a turbocharged setup on and be able to tune it.

I finally came to the conclusion it was dead end and traded it in on a new 09 HHR SS.

To be fair though I never had one problem out of my Ion except rotors (fixed by aftermarket after the 2nd pair warped).

I should have kept that little car for a DD, 35 mpg was nice and it had the ground effects kit on it, aftermarket wheels and custom seats done by the dealer.

I got the new 2011 LHU engine in yesterday. No miles on this engine. We will start locating all the parts we need and get it on an engine stand.
    Thanks, Chuck

They're the same, actually. The only difference is the Crank Sensor. LNF has a 3-wire sensor, LSJ has a 2-wire sensor. I've already discussed this with Ryan@ZZP.

I don't think we will have those problems. We always plan on useing the Factory ECM that GM used on the engine we are useing. Then we just cut out all the circuits we want use and get our tuner to turn them off.
    Thanks, Chuck

chuck do you do any sort of coating on any of the parts? I only ask because i can imagine the turbo hot side would take a beating from the elements and look like doo doo after a lil while.

It looks like 'doo doo' in any weather...it's cast iron

Within a week of the engine running it's not "pretty"

Ceramic coating is really the only thing that would hold up to the heat that I can think of. But I would think that it would flake off eventually with the temps and duration an airboat turbo would see.
