Question S256et turbo heat shield ? HELP needed please.

Thanks for looking and or helping.
I have an S256et installed on a 2.4L and I think I need to make a heat shield to put between the turbo and the exhaust manifold. The reason I am thinking this (point me in the right direction if I am thinking wrong here) is because after a short cruise 5 min or so no boost and coolant temps around 190, oil temp around 108-110, and if I take a lazer temp gun to the center section of the turbo on the front side (towards engine) I'll get a reading of 240-260 degrees and if I move to the back side (away from engine) I'll get a reading of 130-140 degrees. When idling it takes for ever for the temps to come down on the turbo center section to safe temp to shut down. I don't know at what temps oil coking starts but I'd think its pretty close to the front side temps ???

This all being said, do you think I need a heat shield so that the exhaust manifold doesn't heat up the center section of the turbo ? Or should I wrap or coat the exhaust manifold ? Any good ideas on a shield, material or ????
I have had to put bushings in this cause of coking once already and hope not to have to do it again, but if I don't get something fixed here I know I will.

Thanks again for any help, thoughts, coments or random bs, lol.

how many miles did you have on the turbo before rebuild? i typically just let the car idle for a minute before shutdown and have put on 8000 miles since i put the kit on in january. haven't had any issues :crossesfingers:

The turbine section has exhaust gases that are anywhere between 600 and 1600 degrees blowing through it.....radiant heat off the manifold isn't likely an issue.

I believe that after shut down... the heat will naturally make its way down to the center section. Nature of the beast, I suppose. I think slowswap mentioned that once to illustrate the pointlessness of Turbo Timers.

Simply put, no. My Volkswagen runs normally with oil temps of 220-240* (Usually about 25-30* over ECT). I've heard people talk about Oil Temp getting up around 300* when tracking the car... but I don't really know much about that. John would probably have some good insight there.

1 year and 5000 miles turbo bushings were shot and replaced.
Bullseye rebuilt it and said oil coking was the problem with it ???
6 months and 2500 miles on rebuild and I think they are on there way out also ???

Something isn't right here, these turbos should last much longer before a rebuild, right ?

Bushings... you mean Bearings? And yes, they should last MUCH longer than that. Maybe call Bullseye and ZZP and talk to them about it. I don't think a heat shield will do you any good really. If anything, it'll keep more heat in/on the turbo... and then more heat will transfer to the CHRA. I don't have much experience with oil coking... never had a problem with it in either of my two set-ups. This is where having a EGT would be beneficial... to know what kind of temps you are running through it.

Aside from that, all I can say is to idle the car for 30 seconds to a minute after driving... longer if you were being a real dick to the car - but I recommend not being a dick to the car if you know you'll be turning it off soon. I would usually try to idle it until I saw the EGT's drop to 800-900*F before turning it off (this really only came into play after getting off the interstate). Make sure your Oil Drain tube is straight and doesn't force the oil to go uphill at any point. Do you park on any steep inclines? If you ever do... park nose down, if at all possible. This will insure that the oil has the ability to leave the turbo, the oil return line, and enter the oil pan.

No Robert, I mean bushings, no bearings in a S256et.
I have talked to david a bit when the first one went. I am going to make a little vid (this weekend) and maybe I can get him or any of you guys to take a look at it. I will be installing a egt gauge in the very near future, just need to find the time.
I do idle the car for a few minutes after just driving mellow and don't beat on my car to much. If I do it idles for 10-15 minutes, usually more after boosted runs to cool it down. Oil drain tube is good, all flow is downhill and I always park on a level surface.
I do every thing that I have done with turbos before and I just don't get it, lol.
When I run the car hard for a bit oil temps are around 210-230 but the center section front side is 300+ after mellow driving to help cool and about 10 min idling.
I understand the heat transfer from the turbin to the center section, but I don't understand why the big temp difference from the front side to the back side of the center section ? Sure seems like something else is also heating up the turbo ???? idk ?
Thanks for your thoughts, I'll see if I can get a vid soon.

    Thanks Again !
