Default Curious about ZZP's Girdled block

I'm pretty sure you all know how i got shafted by bates. but long story short, my bates block leaks coolant into my oil and theres nothing i can do to fix it besides to live and learn and get a new block when i have the funds. what is everyones thoughts on zzp's block? i just want something that will take 400whp reliably... and also, i know they have the gen 1 blocks (LSJ) and the gen 2 blocks (LNF) available as cores. my question is, can i put in a gen 2 block on my LSJ? is it better then using another gen 1?

The zzp block is great because they don't mess with the sleeves. The sleeves are strong it's the block around them that weakens. And with the bates block they make the aluminum walls thinner allowing them to crack. Really the gen one and two are about equal. I believe Ryan's was actually a gen one block. It is very cheap compared to any sleeved block.

As per Zoomer in the Bates Sleeved Block's thread on .net

"It's been tossed around that the Gen 2 block is better/stronger but this turns out not to be the case actually. They are just different.

If you look at the picture below, see the 2 arrows facing eachother on the Gen 2 block? That is a point where the block cracked. As reference, you can see where GM attached the support to the sleeve in the blocks (gen 1 block in picture is missing top of the sleeve as it's been cut away for the Darton sleeving. The benefit of supporting the block lower is that the entire sleeve is cooled, the downside is that it's not supported except at the bottom. So if sleeving, a Gen 1 block is much better as you're supported in the center of the sleeve vs. the bottom. If girdling, it doesn't matter as much but the Gen 2 block would probably be best as you're supported both top and bottom."

If you only need it to cover 400whp reliably... a stock LSJ long block will do that. A good tune goes a long way. If you are set on building one, or using the parts you already have, either generation Ecotec block is more than capable of holding 400whp ever single day.

Personally, with all the trouble that you've had... I think it'd probably be in your best interest to use a 100% stock LSJ long block. You could sell the rest of your parts and attempt to make back some of the money that you've put into this built block. Also, I'd make 100% sure that the block is what's actually leaking before you waste more money on something that is potentially not the problem.

for 400whp stock is the way to go, cheap and lasts (we've got 10's of thousands of miles at over 400-450whp without a failure).
I'd recommend it, but you know my feelings on the arrogance of zzp.
I personally wouldn't buy an oil filter from them.

Is arrogance any reason to shun someone if they make a good part tho?

Sure. People will always select their products based on different things. Some base it off of price alone, regardless of quality (buying TTR mounts instead of PRS). Some base it off of customer service alone (I know guys that'll buy a POS part because they know once it goes bad, it'll get replaced for free, no questions asked). Other base it off of things like how they like a company and the people that work for that company (I know plenty of people that will NOT buy from TTR because they think Aaron is a douche... even if he has the same product at a lower price). And then there are others that will buy the "best" product no matter what, even if the company that creates the product is full of douches that rip off their customers, exploit child labor in Vietnam, and sex 8 year olds in the shower.

    Just a few, quick examples.
