Default How to change trans roll pins

First step is to buy some good strong replacement roll pins. They are hard to find, try Fastenal. I will post specs later.

Second is, if you ever service the transmission or clutch its best to change the roll pins at that time, its a lot easier.

Third, its easier to remove the fuse box to access the roll pins and do the job, but it can be done with the driver side wheel removed. But its hard to get in and drive the pins out, so just disconnect the battery and remove the fuse box.

The roll pins are actually metric sized, but a 1 x 3/16 pin will work.
You can use a punch or a specific roll pin punch tool. Ya wanna be scared? Hand guns have roll pins so go to a gun shop and buy a tool

    The roll pins:

The punch kit from Snap On I use to remove roll pins

Line up and hammer it out

    its out.

align the shift lever on the shaft and press in the new roll pin.

see how easy it is with the transmission out of the car?

Damn I wish there was a how to for this years ago when i broke the **** out of my pin. I cant stress enough how important it is to make sure you get a GOOD quality replacement pin. When mine broke i switched my broken one with another ****ty one and a couple days later going down the street It broke again, i was new to the manual tranny then and it ended up costing me a lot of money cause i completely burned out the clutch lol. Awsome write up qwik.

    John,
Years ago, I used to double roll pin (a second pin inside the first) my Datsun gearboxes. (Hey kiddies, this was pre Nissan days. ) I would think that should work with F35/F23 boxes too.

if that would work not a bad idea. the rollpins i have, however, for replacement are tightly wound with no space in the middle (3/16 roughly diameter) so good thing you did there, that might not work in this instance....

Oops! Perhaps a mistake on my part. I just assumed the F23 also suffered from roll pin problems. (And we all know what the word "assume" means!)

I have kinda wondered regarding the roll pins, do they get weak over time and create a sloppy shift feel? Or do they just usually break?
