Default Matts Paint Work Thread: la la la

well it seems people keep recommending me for work so i figured i would pile some here.

heres my buddys 240 valve cover. its a ford purple base on the cover itself and then a acura silver for all the lettering. a lot of taping of the letters. although the pics suck because they are from my phone the coil cover is reverse of the valve cover..... acura silver with ford purple for the lettering. again a lot of taping and time.

feel free to ask questions. i can also provide paint codes and such. again sorry for the crap cell pics.

Niiice! I like this thread My boss just asked me last night if I would be interesting in doing all of the painting at my job. Right now we sublet our painting out to 2 mobile paint guys for bumper touchups etc. and theyv been doing a crappy job so he asked me and I told him id love to but the only problem is iv never blended clear yet, which is most of the crap we got to do. Told him we have a practice hood there and ill paint the hell out of it and practice blendind clear all day if he wants me to paint, but I almost dont want to bother painting if it doesnt pay me more then PDR. Dealing with all the fumes, and chemicals, and time to mask off and sand etc.

thanks i know you have been waiting for pics for awhile. i have more. i just need to get everything all together and get some more work aswell. i need to also get a new camera. cell phone pics wont cut it. blending clear isnt a big deal. our paint line uses a special blending solvet to help aid it. i usually 3000 the blend and buff it in. i dont like the carnica style air brush ship blend jobs. they eventually become a huge pain in my ass when it comes time to refinish blend panels...not to mention that crap will flake off evnetualyl.

yea i hear ya. Iv seen a bunch of blended clear panels and sanded and buffed a few blended spots backed to a gloss after we got it back from the painter just never tried it yet. I was tought how to do it when i was in school just never went out and tackled it. They said to just backmask the area, clear the area you basecoated, then slowly work your clear out in coats closer to the tape, then dump the clear out of the gun but leave a tiny bit in the tip, dump the slowest reducer you have in the gun and put a few wet coats close to the tape line, watchign and waiting to spray again immediatly after the last one evaporates. Then let dry and compound the panel with the buffer wheel spinning in the direction where the pad is spinning from the new clear into the old clear to help melt them together and not to push the new clear further down into the panel. Thats about all i remember how to do it lol. Is that right? I dont remember if im missing anything or if theres a better way to do it

thats more of a pain in the @$$ then you reall need to make it. also blending clear like that might run the risk of burning the exsisting clear when you wetsand it down. the problem is doing it that way makes it real easy to lay the clear on thick. check with your paint line and see if they make a blending solvent. if they do the shop should have it. it will make things a ton easier on you. you use the same principle almost. what i normally do is.......make a tape line where i want to put my blend. sand and scuff the whole panel up to a little before where i want to make a blend(aka the tape). then i take a 3" buffer and compound like the next 6-8" of panel to give it a good clean surface. then i make the car up like i would if i were doing a full clear wrap say on a quarter panel. then i slowly back mask the area(not back tape). i mean back mask by ill cover the area. up to where i wanna blend leaving the paper so it shows the scuff marks about 4-6" of blend room. ill clear my first coat, then my second coat a little farther so that my clear has covered the scuff scratches succesfully then ill pull away that sheet of paper and take my mini jet with blending solvet and spray another 2 inches in into the existing panel and 2 inches into the clear itself. then when its done baking and cooling i sand the whole area with 3000 to decay some of the blend and then buff if it. be careful with the wool bad as most blends are buffed in with a polishing pad.

thanks man. pretty much if you can think of it i can build it. although something i will note....aem WILL NOT fit on the column unless you get the frog eye style pods. theres no good way to position it. if you move it forward you hit the steering wheel at full tilt. if you move it backwards far enough to where it clears the wheel you wont be able to adjust your steering wheel.
